Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Bauhinia racemosa L. stem bark BJMBR
Kumar,R.S.; Sivakumar,T.; Sunderam,R.S.; Gupta,M.; Mazumdar,U.K.; Gomathi,P.; Rajeshwar,Y.; Saravanan,S.; Kumar,M.S.; Murugesh,K.; Kumar,K.A..
The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of a methanol extract of Bauhinia racemosa (MEBR) (Caesalpiniaceae) stem bark in various systems. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide anion radical, nitric oxide radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the extract. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract increased in a concentration-dependent manner. About 50, 100, 250, and 500 µg MEBR inhibited the peroxidation of a linoleic acid emulsion by 62.43, 67.21, 71.04, and 76.83%, respectively. Similarly, the effect of MEBR on reducing power increased in a concentration-dependent manner. In DPPH radical scavenging assays the...

Assay of antioxidant potential of two Aspergillus isolates by different methods under various physio-chemical conditions BJM
Arora,Daljit Singh; Chandra,Priyanka.
The objective of this work was to screen fungi isolated from soil of different areas of Punjab, India for antioxidant activity by dot blot assay and around 45% of fungal isolates demonstrated antioxidant potential. Two selected strains of Aspergillus spp (Aspergillus PR78 and Aspergillus PR66) showing quantitatively best antioxidant activity by DPPH assay were further tested for their reducing power, ferrous ion and nitric oxide ion scavenging activity, FRAP assay and total phenolic content. Different physio-chemical parameters were optimized for enhancement of the activity. This revealed stationary culture grown for 10 days at 25ºC at pH 7 to be the best for antioxidant activity. Sucrose in the medium as carbon source resulted in highest antioxidant...

Investigation on the in vitro antioxidant capacity of methanol extract, fractions and flavones from Oroxylum indicum Linn bark BJPS
Trang,Do Hoang Thu; Son,Hoang Le; Trung,Phung Van.
ABSTRACT Antioxidants from natural sources hold high values regarding their indispensible roles in the development of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products. Oroxylum indicum L. is a common medicinal plant with a wide range of therapeutic properties, including a notable antioxidant potency that was reported, yet has not been subjected to more detailed studies. The present study evaluated the potency of Oroxylum indicum methanol stem bark extract, along with its hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol fractions, three flavones including baicalein, oroxylin A and chrysin using DPPH assay. In terms of IC50 values, the crude extract (65,48 μg/mL) exhibited moderate inhibitory activity which was as half potent as that of its ethyl acetate fraction (32,94...

Phytoconstituents and antioxidant properties among commercial tea (Camellia sinensis L.) clones of Iran Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Azadi Gonbad,Reza; Afzan,Adlin; Karimi,Ehsan; Sinniah,Uma Rani; Kumara Swamy,Mallappa.
Background Tea (Camellia sinensis), a well-known beverage is consumed frequently worldwide due to its high antioxidant properties. The present study determines the amount of phytochemicals and antioxidant activities among 12 high yielding tea clones cultivated in Iran. Results Among the 12 clones studied, tea clone Iran 100 had the highest total phenolic content and total flavonoid content with values of 8.44 ± 1.03 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram dry weight and 4.50 ± 0.16 mg rutin equivalents per gram dry weight respectively. High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis of phenolics and flavonoids in 12 clones revealed the presence of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin-gallate, (-)-epicatechingallate,...

Synthesis and DPPH scavenging assay of reserpine analogues, computational studies and in silico docking studies in AChE and BChE responsible for Alzheimer's disease BJPS
Yar,Muhammad; Arshad,Muhammad; Farooq,Ariba; Gilani,Mazhar Amjad; Ayub,Khurshid; Ejaz,Asma; Kumar,Anupriya; Ninomiya,Ichiya.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a fast growing neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system and anti-oxidants can be used to help suppress the oxidative stress caused by the free radicals that are responsible for AD. A series of selected synthetic indole derivatives were biologically evaluated to identify potent new antioxidants. Most of the evaluated compounds showed significant to modest antioxidant properties (IC50 value 399.07 140.0±50 µM). Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies were carried out on the compounds and their corresponding free radicals. Differences in the energy of the parent compounds and their corresponding free radicals provided a good justification for the trend found in their IC50 values. In silico, docking of compounds into...

Rice contains several kinds of bio-functional components. In this study, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Tocopherol, or Vitamin E were identified and their relationships to antioxidant activity using DPPH assay of both brown and pre germinated Thai rice varieties were studied. GABA are one of the two inhibitory neurotransmitters which make the neuron resistant to stimulation by excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitor of some cancer cells activity whereas Tocopherol, or Vitamin E, which acts as antioxidant and improve blood cholesterol. Identification of GABA and Tocopherol in both brown and pre-germinated brown rice grown from different locations were conducted in eleven varieties, namely: Khao Dawk Mali 105, PTT1, CN1, RD31, Sang yod, RD6, Hom...
